About the $40 billion in fresh U.S. aid to the Ukraine…
I laugh—like a big, condescending jerk—at people who complain now about it. Hahaha. This is so silly. Like Mr. T, “I pity the fool.”
The PROPER time to complain, is when this figure has risen to $70 or $80 billion.
Which it will surely do, by late summer, or early autumn at the latest, IMHO. This year, anyway.
What’s in the $40 billion? Of course, no one’s going to give that much cash to the Ukrainian funny farm, directly.
I have not read the bill, but intuitively, I know it’s mostly to compensate the U.S. Department of Defense for weapons donated to the Ukraine, as well as the cost of delivering them to the Ukraine (up to 14 NATO cargo flights per day into Poland), as well as compensating certain (mostly east European) NATO countries for their own donations, so they can buy new (mostly American) stuff as replacement.
It’s a big bonanza for the arms manufacturers.
Any direct economic assistance to the Ukraine will be just enough to barely hold up its pants, same as every year since 2014, when they began showing this donkey just enough carrot to keep it on its feet and shuffling in their direction, nothing more.
A more important question than “what’s the $40 billion for”…..
…..is why did Republican senators fly to Kiev a week ago, to kiss Saint Zelensky’s ring?
Of course, they did it to signal to their military-industrial campaign donors that they are “cool.”
You see, there’s not much money for Federal campaigns in (for example) Wyoming.
So, Senator Barrasso must go scrounging around with various national lobbies and interests whose voice means more than Wyoming’s.
(We’ve seen the same with Dick Cheney’s lookalike son, Liz.)
For as long as an other-party challenger can raise money the same way, Wyoming’s incumbent senator(s) will always hear nationwide (or out-of-state) lobbies and interests, AT LEAST AS MUCH as they hear their own voters.
Surely, our Founding Slave-owners did not intend the peoples’ representatives from X state or district to merely hold down a seat for the national oligarchy, or for rich ideological donors on the coasts (but I repeat myself.)
But, that’s where we are.
Of course, Barrasso will vote for giveaways for Wyoming. But on any question where it’s not actually taking money out of their pockets…..
…..he will always ignore the wishes and moral interests of his constituents, if the price is right.
I’m sure most Wyoming republican voters (i.e. most Wyoming adults) would rather he say something about the 1/6 prisoners who are still rotting in jail without a court date, for mere trespassing (when the doors were open, anyway.)
But, you know, Barrasso must be “respectable” to national donors. He has a campaign to fund!
Texas senator John Cornyn also flew to Kiev, what a clown. In his time off from Washington, he should be camping on the Mexican border!
How does it look to his conservative voters, that this big bozo spends his “recess” flying to Kiev to shake hands with Saint Zelensky, instead?
We need a CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT to prohibit persons and entities with no genuine presence or operations in a given state, from donating money to campaigns in that state.

Donbass update
Russian VDV mobile infantry and Wagner mercenaries have advanced up to 15 kilometers west of Popasnaya…..
…..and have taken several towns or villages just east of Soledar, which sits on the one paved, continuous, Ukrainian-controlled main road into Lisichansk.
This road is now at risk. Russians are now as little as three kilometers from the road.
Close enough to fly short-range artillery spotter drones over it, 24/7.
Without this road, there will be no meaningful resupply for (or organized evacuation of) thousands of Ukrainian servicemen in the eastern part of the north Lugansk bulge.
The defense of this Ukrainian bulge ending at Severodonetsk-Lisichansk is crumbling.
The writing is on the wall.
You now see why Uncle Sam was calling Russia for a ceasefire.

Great update as well. I am worried about the US. I lived through food shortages during the collapse of the Soviet Union. It was ugly. When the government finally released cans from military food bank, it was the bottom, but the west celebrated with drunk Yeltzin. It will not be that bad here, but unpleasant. Well off people might afford high prices, but not poor. I loved the video of May 9th celebration. I watched entire parade on Rutube as well. All expatriates stand firmly with Russia, we know what is going on and why.

Apparently monkeypox is popping up all over the western world. Great. Gas is $4.29 here in Clarksville, TN. I haven’t seen that price since Shrub was in office. I have noticed traffic is much thinner at the main strip near the mall that is filled up with chain restaurants. People are not going out like they used to. I don’t know how people are surviving. Rents are beyond the ability of most people to pay with the average income in town. I fully expect people to start rioting soon. At least I live by a military base so not likely to see insanity here. This whole situation is building to something very ugly.

On the constitution amendment idea: it looks nice ON PAPER, just as the other amendment or the base constitution — but it’s as good as much of it is applied. I agree with your Ideas on campaign donations, however there are sneaky ways to get funding to the chosen. A story is just breaking on how a very powerful group including a former head of MI6 brought about the downfall of Theresa May PM in order to replace her with BOJO. the purpose of this was to bring about Brexit in order to move the UK away from Europe and back closer to the US. The problem as I see it is that if these groups are successful even if they break campaigning rules and face penalties they don’t care they got what they wanted. I am not saying that British people wouldn’t have voted for Brexit anyway but this group removed any potential obstacles including a sitting PM. To be fair they were up against similarly ruthless groups to themselves from the Remain side so all’s fair and all that. The US system of government is much better to facilitate change like you point out that’s what Amendments are. Very good post, we need to understand the reason for war before we can bring about any reasonable change.

He was convicted twice. The second time, he could not avoid jail, two years of it.
I’m from Wyoming. Everything you say about Barraso is correct. The governance in Wyoming is much more liberal than it’s people. Most those in government despise the people they represent. This is not just at the federal level, but state reps and senators also. They mostly are doing what they can to help Liz get reelected. The way it works is that Wyoming is pretty solidly republican. If you win the republican primary you are probably going to get elected so all the action is in the primary.
The state politicians fight tooth and nail to allow cross-over voting and to allow the most votes to win the primary even if it’s less than 50%. For example, when our govenor was elected, he only won 35% of the primary vote. 3 other republicans split 65% of the vote – all much more conservative – and more importantly – constitutional than Mark Gordon.
that is how Liz will try to win, in the primary. Unfortunately for her, there is only 1 republican running against her, so she is betting on crossovers to give her the edge. There were bills this year to prevent crossovers and to require a runnoff in primaries. Both defeated by the friend of Liz like Barrasso and his like.
I would like to point out, that our other Senator Cynthia Loomis voted against the $40 billion. Only 11 so called Republicans voted against. So give her a shout out.

Registered Democrats are able to vote in the Republican primary. Liz has huge amounts of money and is using it to mobilize democrats to vote in the Republican primary for her. I don’t think this particular strategy will work. I think she is also secretly funding other “Republican” candidates to try and split the vote. That is the strategy that is usually most successful. This year might be different however.

Jacob, you are probably the only Western military expert who has closely followed the small village of Popasnaya, which occupies not only the crossroads of important roads, but also the dominant height in the whole east of Ukraine. Only Popasnaya offers a beautiful view simultaneously with Severodonetsk and Lisichansk in the north-east, and to Bakhmut and Kramatorsk in the west and Donetsk in the south.

You are correct. By logical extension, as the economic pain on the EU grows there will be more pressure on EU politicians to convince Ukraine for a diplomatic solution. I really think (contrary to what military “analysts” say in MSM), that time is on Russian side. Excellent points throughout. Our politicians always tend to represent who DONATE more than those who vote, so you are 100% correct on how campaign financing should be reformed. A great deal of balance will be restored by just disallowing out-of-state donations to be made, and then we might have a fighting chance to turn things around.

From watching and listening to Ritter, he is definitely erratic on occasions especially when he hyperventilates but otherwise he is still much more on point than most “analysts”, and has extensive experience to draw from. I assess his analysis in the context of other analysts such as yourself, Martyanov, Johnson and Macgregor.
The Azovstal show has finally closed after a slightly extended run, a Eurovision win and a few curtain calls, with “Volyna” and “kalyna” the last to exit as befitting their star status.
I’ve read that in order to conquer an urban environment such as Mariupol, the attackers need at least a 3:1 superior manpower ratio due to the simple fact that it’s far easier to defend than attack a heavily built up area. But it seems like Mariupol was a 1:1 ratio, give or take? I wonder was the Azovstal “fortress” a magnet that drew the Ukrainians into a trap of their own making, where they thought they could tough it out until rescue came. Or perhaps the Russians are particularly good at urban warfare – no doubt the lessons from Stalingrad etc are still foremost in Russian military academies since WW2.

1)Banning out-of-state donor contributions? This is double-edged sword. Out-of-state donors can be good as well bad. You mentioned bad out-of-state donors. So I mention good ones: Remember 2010 and 2012 elections: Then there was Tea Party movement. It was such great idea to support them financially even out-of-state. Also, since 2008 and especially 2012, there have been followers of Ron Paul. For couple of years, they socialize at society called Mises Causus. And there are great republicans (Thomas Massey or Rand Paul-types) who run as Republicans, not on LP ballots. It is such great idea to support them even out-of-state!
2)Sorry, but I must defend Scott Ritter vehemently. If he said US would use nuclear bombs in Iraq in person at school meeting, it is not as credible as if confirmed by multiple sources online, but let´s believe you are correct about this. Still, errare humanum est. Everyone says something stupid sometimes. Only when someone unknown says it, no one cares, because he/she is unknown and not publically known person like i.e. Scott Ritter. Hypothetically, Scott Ritter. at the time he said it, might have been in terrible psychic state because he might have been bullied by state authorities or by the public.
Also, I consider very bad and irrelevant to mention his criminal case against 15-year-old police female impersonator. What relevancy does this have to his expertise about the war in UA? None. The incumbent/establishment opponents of “tea party” / MAGA insurgent challenger candidates, almost all get most of their financing from far outside the given district, or more to the point, the given state. In a fair, even match-up with equal (local) finances, MAGA republicans would absolutely clean up and take over the GOP very quickly. This is why the GOP establishment would never support my proposal.
