On May 27th, Saint Zelensky accused Russia of committing “genocide” in the Donbass (the Ukraine’s Donetsk and Lugansk provinces, a.k.a. the Donetsk and Lugansk Peoples’ Republics.)
The Western press agencies picked it up and made headlines out of it, because, what else are they to do?
For them, if Saint Z said it, it’s news.
Let’s see what the locals have to say.
The below two videos (both evidently taken by Russian or Donetsk soldiers) are from the town of Svetlodarsk, the center of a massively fortified, Ukrainian salient in Donetsk territory since 2014 or 2015.
The town was evacuated (without a fight) by Ukrainian forces a few days ago, after coming under threat of encirclement from the northeast.
Here’s the first video.
The ladies from 0:00 to around 0:14 are saying, among other things, “Yes, of course we waited (for you)” and (the smiling blonde in the pink cream coat) “Everyone wants to see, hug, and kiss you!”
The ladies from around 0:15 to 0:26 are also elated. The one on the right says, “We awaited you for so long.”
Then, the man behind them says (rough translation, cannot be translated literally), “You made it here, good job guys… Wonderful, wonderful.”
The older folks starting from 0:27, also seem pleased. The white-haired lady says (rough translation, to get the point across), “Well, you know what we had to live with here.”
The man next to her adds, “So we waited, waited with impatience. On (satellite?) TV, we watch Russian channels, and (we track where is the) theater of military operations, where is it, where is it moving to… Like generals who track where the forces are, where they will pass… We sweated for every soldier, for all of them.”
I’m sorry, I can’t process this. What did this guy say? He sounds like he’s speaking from occupied France in late summer 1944, awaiting the Yanks with a bottle of champagne that he had buried under his chicken coop when the Krauts moved into town. There is smoke coming out of my ears, and I don’t think it’s from my fourth booster shot.
Doesn’t he know, it’s a big no-no to pick up Russian broadcasts on Ukrainian territory? Someone charge this guy with treason, please. He’s disloyal, like… like Tucker Carlson and Matt Gaetz!
The last few seconds of the video shows four local boys posing with Donetsk soldiers, the Victory Banner—the flag of the Red Army’s 150th Rifle Division, raised over the Reichstag in 1945, and now flown over all territories newly under control of Russian, Donetsk, and/or Lugansk forces—and (at left) what may be the given unit’s colors.
I can imagine the haters saying (as has already happened with other liberated cities) that the Russians got all these people to come out at gunpoint, or at best, by giving them a free meal and a movie ticket with a coupon for Twizzlers or Sour Patch Kids. Well, you know what they say: Haters gonna hate!

The little girl relates, “I ran with (my) grandmother to see the flag… We sat over there. I was so happy. I don’t know how to convey it in words.”
She then relates how she was studying in Ukrainian but now expects to be studying in Russian (obviously the language she and 95 percent of the Donbass speaks at home and in the course of routine business.)
Of course, what you don’t see, off camera, is the Russian gun pointed at her grandmother’s head. “One wrong word, girl, and babushka is toast.” LOL, sure.
To be fair, public opinion is nowhere 100 percent in one direction. However, I’m guessing most of those who were just fine under Ukrainian rule (for sure, the appointed mayor and his family and a bunch of other officials and their families) got out with the retreating Ukrainian forces.
(Just as happened in this same part of the world, when the Germans retreated in 1943.)
If any of this is a surprise to you, perhaps it’s finally, finally time to ditch the double facemask and unplug from the Lamestream Media?
I mean, do you want a form of virtual reality entertainment, or do you want information?
A final, unrelated note: Many commenters ask how the next phase will go, how much destruction, etc. Folks, I don’t expect that much destruction. It’s one thing to defend the Ukraine by wasting the Donbass and some Russian-oriented towns and villages in Kharkov. It’s quite another when you have to defend parts of the Ukraine inhabited by “good, loyal Ukrainians”, including the families of Ukrainian army soldiers and officers. After the Donbass and Kharkov, there won’t be any more “Stalingrads.” This isn’t quite Nazi Germany; these Aryans won’t de-house themselves.

Oh yeah I keep getting sneaky green men on Donbas walked into it and made it rebel. I keep asking why stop there? Why not send insurgents to Kiev, Lviv or London and just take it over? Insurgencies only work when there is local support. Most people just want to get along with what is there but Russia keeps winning its wars because they are largely working with local support. South Ossetia told me all i needed to know about where the West was going with this…Putin could not save his own mother without here being coerced into accepting his aid.

Oh the Ukronazi junta continued that narrative, it just didn’t get much MSM airtime. Remember when they handed out AKs like candy to every moron in Kiev for “defense”? All extrajudicial killings that resulted were “suppressing Russian saboteurs” … when in reality they just killed random civilians. How many died because they didn’t want to give up their car or couldn’t say “bread” in Ukrainian properly, we’ll never know. Almost completely ignored just like the hundreds of lynchings among other crimes.
Of course, this is what should be expected when you end up releasing a bunch of criminals from prison and arm them. I’m pretty sure that reporter that ended up dying back then was most likely shot by one of these morons with an AK playing at soldier at a blockpost.
In other cases, there’s some pretty gruesome video evidence on telegram, heck, back when some news channel had that youtube webcam up with audio from maidan square hotel you could hear periodic small arms fire and at that point Russians were not even in the outskirts of Kiev.
If this is happening at gun point then these must be the best people at acting a forced role under duress in all human history.
As you say, across Ukraine and even in the Donbass itself there will be other people who do not feel that way. War is complex and rarely a simple narrative of one side the saints, the other one pure evil.

Regarding the lady speaking about AFU provocations, she is actually introduced as someone that believes in “Putins’s Propaganda” on TV, thus conditioning the listener to be skeptical of what she says because, well… she is an innocent Ukrainian caught in a evil web of deceit – this is basically just turning an assumption into a fact

Something I’d be interested in getting your thoughts on: if Russia wanted to “respond” to weapon systems being supplied to Ukraine that it felt upped the ante too much, do you think starting to take out spy satellites / Starlink over Ukraine is something that is being considered? My understanding is that the S-500 supposedly can nail LEO satellites, and Russia (and I assume the US) have other anti-satellite weapons. I have not heard this option discussed, and only things like arming US adversaries with better weapons as a next elevation step.

I agree. However, it appears that her present happiness belies living through years of war – visible in the darkness encircling her eyes (not shadows from lighting. I hope that this conflict and the evil involvement of the US will open the eyes of all Americans and that we vow – as a nation – never to allow our government to engage in such atrocities (whether overtly or covertly) in our name. Videos did not surprise me, anyone who is from former Soviet Union, expected this. Dissolution of Union was illegal and not right, everybody wanted communism to end, but not to destroy the country. Putin is great leader, I wish US had someone like him.

The thing that I find particularly frustrating these days is that people ‘wake up’ to the fact the government and media are lying to them about some things, but can’t seem to take the extra step to doubt everything in the government/corporate narrative. It’s not easy to discover the truth, but a good first step is to recognize that the professional liars have no regard for the truth regarding any subject at all.
Here in Asia we saw the Western MSM lies up front and personal too. They lionised the Hong Kong riots at the same time that the rioters were beating up policemen and people who disagreed with them. In the same way that the war in Ukraine is opening up Western eyes, the HK riots opened up Asian ones.

The MSM is beyond complicit in this. I have conversations daily with people who think that Putin is a monster here, and are totally unaware of what has been going on in Donbass for a decade or more. They are all MSM viewers. And sadly, when I try to direct them to a website that would tell them the actual information, it is only ‘alternative’ sites, that these MSM viewers won’t believe. They are even unaware of the Azov/Nazi connection.

Quick question – is there any new information on the campaign of rounding up and putting down “suspected Russian sympathizers and agents” in the parts of Ukraine under Kiev’s control? You were one of the very few people who reported on it with some nice detail and images and videos. Any word on if they finished hunting down all the “undesirables” they could? Did any new information come up about those who were already disappeared? I know former Rada member Kiva announced he has testimony from an escapee from the death squads, so this topic is likely to heat up soon.
There may still be at least one “second Mariupol”, and that’s Odessa. No way the war ends without Odessa being denazified – and the Banderite faction regards it with almost the same hatred as Mariupol and runs it similarly. Odessa is also the only real stronghold of theirs outside of what’s being rolled up in Donbass (and Lwow, but that’s by default). So, I feel it’s just a question of when the southwest offensive is launched that we’ll see more Mariupol-style things.
I read ships are entering Mariupol with building supplies for reconstruction efforts. I find it amazing how fast and throug Russia had committed itself to rebuilding towns, offering open dialogue with local communities,reestablishing services, and a local law enforcement elements. It is giving the world hope.

– ‘Russians’ stand for both languages have rights, no foreign occupation, no fascism, no destruction of history (including WW2 memorials), respect/honor your land/ancestors, etc. These include PLENTY of ukranian language and ethnic ukranians who are fighting against Kiev and ‘NATO occupation’
Because it is a political choice, you would get weird reports when a russian language nazis within Azov on Donbass position shelled ukranian language and ukranian ethnic villages, it is reported as ‘Ukranians are fighing on Russian separatists’.
So it is not a war between the states (which neither state declared), not a war between ethnicities, it is a war of ideology/political positions primarily between people within former Ukraine and all former Soviet Union, i.e. there are chechens fighting on both sides, Georgians (Kartveli) on both sides, Pushtuns on both sides (!), etc, ‘Russians’ include volunteers from US, France, and all over the world, so are the ‘Ukranians’.
Next time you hear ‘we stand with Ukraine’, understand it means ‘we stand with fascism’.

I spent 4 years around 2010 on business in Donbas. Once I asked locals why nobody speaks Ukrainian. They laughed and said they only have it in school and sometimes they have to use it with gov’t agencies. Otherwise all speak Russian. All technical and business reports were done in Russian as well.
I’ve been to all the places where there now is fighting and just wish to people there permanent peace after this – they deserve it.
I also visited few times Lvov and areas around Ivano-Frankivsk and Chernivtsi (south-east of Lvov towards Romanian border). All settlements there had their names on road signs in Ukrainian and Romanian. There are plenty of people there who do not consider themselves Ukrainians.

It makes a very long time i haven’t seen any video of population/civilians opposing to Russian forces. The UKR PR were very prolific at the beginning of the conflict … (even it was many footage from 2014 / Russian speaking opposing to the Ukrainians tanks … reused as Civilians vs Russians). Are the Hollywood writers on strike ?
I am so happy for them!! I never thought that I might one day want more to be a Russian, than an American, but here I am, disgusted with the corrupt political machine in the US, and admiring the solid reason and planning the Russians have put into every part of this, in their determination to free a people of tyranny. Mind blown, but I rejoice still, for those who have been freed from a nation that sought to destroy them.

That is also my thoughts on this matter also. I always wanted to visit Russia never imagined I would actually prefer to live in Russia as opposed to the west. That is where my head is now. Living in Russia is more attractive to me more than ever now because the insanity of the west is just intolerable now. I have no clue how it can be fixed or if it can be fixed.

Been watching this from the start Jacob and your analysis is quite correct. The vast majority of these people are very happy the Russian army came to help unless of coarse there are Russian military behind the camera going to shoot anyone says the wrong thing.
Over the last few months I have gathered together a small network of telegram channels which I have come to rely on for truthful reporting behind enemy lines. Sure they are a little biased but that is ok. They are pro Russian and understandably so. This is where we are so am so thankful for your reporting because it shows me I am not so mad after all in my reading of the situation on the ground in Ukraine.

I remember doing something very similar in 2015-16 when you could just search on a few key words and an entire gallery of azov nazi rune, slaughtered civilians i.e. inna kukuruza, tuvs, gorlovka madonna, odessa inferno, mariupol massacres, tiki torch parades, McCain/Tyahnybok photo-ops, ad nauseam appear (and all long since purged).
One day, I showed a few pages from one photo gallery on my laptop to one of those solar city techs musk was sending around for free solar array workups. He looked up at me and gasped: “Those are the people we’re supporting over there?” He was truly in shock.

The flag on the left is of Lugansk People’s Republic, not unit flag and troops appear to be LPR forces.
Maybe someone mentioned it already, but I haven’t noticed.
