In somewhat related news, Russia now claims to have destroyed 51 more Ukrainian manned fixed-wing aircraft than were in the Ukraine’s arsenal (according to Russia’s estimate) as of February 23rd. According to Russian unofficial but reliable sources, they are coming primarily from Slovakia and Bulgaria. Remember all that talk of moving “donated” combat planes from eastern Europe into the Ukraine? Well, you didn’t hear any more about it….. but it looks to have happened.
It seems some of these former Warsaw Pact countries have donated essentially all of their remaining MiG-29’s, SU-25s, and whatever other combat aircraft to the Ukraine, presumably with the prospect of some compensation, perhaps coming out of “the $40 billion” from the U.S. Congress.
What’s funny is that besides old Soviet planes, these countries don’t really have any other combat aircraft in their air forces. Whereas Poland gave the Ukraine 200 old tanks that were lacking in maintenance and had been largely stripped of their electronics and optics systems (great for headlines, but for Poland it was junk)…..
….Little suck-up gimp countries like Slovakia and Bulgaria appear to have actually GIVEN AWAY THEIR ENTIRE AIR FORCES.
Now, they don’t have squat. I suppose they are expecting Uncle Sam to offload some used F-15’s or F-16’s on them, together with training and technical assistance guarantees. So much for “NATO countries pulling their own weight.“

It may be true that they shipped the Ukrainians these extra aircraft but did they also “resurrect” the dead or wounded pilots? Did they just bail out of one burning wreck to simply scamper towards a fresh one idling on the runway?
Maybe is like in the Korean War Russian Pilots flying Mig 15(s) but they were suppose to be North Koreans. So why not Check and Rumanian Pilots flying the airplanes if they Bail out they probably land in friendly territory if found dead they probably have uniforms and ID Cards of the Ukrainian Air Force nothing new here.
During the Korean War the Russians Flew Mig 15(s) on the side of the North Koreans and pretended to be North Koreans and were not allowed to fly over enemy territory as not to be captured and give the game away. So what is there the Checks and Rumanians in Ukrainian Uniforms and Identification Cards to be flying these airplanes since Ukraine is probably out of pilots. They would normally be flying over friendly territory and if crash in enemy territory all the evidence would point to been Ukrainian. That is not to say that the Russians do not know about it. They probably detect these airplanes from the moment they take off in the bases inside Rumania and the Check Republic. Nothing new here. They make good Targets!!!!!

But I don’t see accounts of effective use of these planes in terms of strikes. Is this just the reporting or do these planes just make very quick local attacks. Certainly they don’t look like an effective resource and it must be demoralising for the Ukranians to see their continuous loss ie counterproductive for any gain made

I’m Czech so this isn’t easy reading but I admit it’s probably essentially correct (with regards to the sucking up).
Anywho. The MiG-29s however didn’t come from here. We haven’t had any for 30 years. When we split with the Slovaks in 1993, we divided all common state property 2:1 (relative population proportion) with the MiGs being an exception. The Slovaks kept them all (20, of which God knows how many are operational today, probably half), we got Sokol helicopters in exchange (what a trade). We have been renting Gripens from the Swedes ever since.
Btw the peaceful split of Czechoslovakia was a phenomenal success, from plan to execution in 6 months, not a single bullet shot, we’ve been best friends ever since, better than ever. So that’s a thing others (the US for example) could learn from. But that’s a different story for another day.

Politically and socially very similar, even if Romania is different in that their language is not a Slavic one unlike most of Eastern Europe. However, this particular deal, like you suggest, probably is tied to a future delivery of heavily discounted F-16s. The MiGs apparently will reach the end of their lives in 2030, their maintenance isn’t cheap (two engines and all). The Slovaks will get new old toys at a discount, they get rid of dependence on “Soviet technology”, the Yankees will get rid of a few old planes and will tap into the 40B for new ones. Win-win. Except of course for the Ukrainian pilots that will be shot down, the Ukrainian / Donetsk civilians because this will prolong the war by another week or so, and the American taxpayers who will foot the bill.

We (Czechs) were the first victims of Hitler even before WW2 started. We just surrendered. I know it gets a lot of laughs and scorn but I’m not convinced it was a mistake. We were a highly industrial and superrich country back then, I think 7th richest per capita in the world. We could have put up a fight I guess, we would have painted a few kraut eyes black. Hey I’m from Bulgaria and there are absolutely no news for us giving any planes in this conflict. In face we were the last to actually send any military support to UKR. So I’m wondering what’s the source. But really sure if we had any functional plans to give anyway too

Slovakia did not give away their entire air force to Ukraine. They still have something like 3 or 4 MIG-29s that are operational. But those are apparently equipped with NATO avionics, and hence not easily usable by Ukrainian pilots.
A couple of months ago Slovakia donated their S-300 system to Ukraine. Russians reported it destroyed two days after it was donated, which the Ukrainians and Slovakians denied. A couple of days ago Slovakia donated 5 Russian made helicopters to Ukraine, which apparently had already been decommissioned and replaced by Blackhawks.

He is a decorated Indian officer and clearly has an agenda to get India to invest more in its military both with respect to artillery and manpower. Points out that early on in the north Russia got it wrong by having too few men and held back on using their firepower. Got it right in the south and have now reverted to their traditional artillery driven way of war, which is working. Thinks they have an overall manpower issue with respect to infantry numbers.
Points out that 45% of tank kills have been by artillery and rocket batteries (per Austrian analysis) and only 13% from Javelins. Very clear too that the tank is not dead but it must be used as part of an overall team and it needs top attack protection. Clear that UAVs are not war winning though if you have good air defence, as Russia does. But thinks they have not used air power as well as they could have to support advances beyond S400 cover. Also criticizes Russian comms security that enabled the US to track the movements of generals but says that you lose generals in war and they should lead from the front. Thinks that Russia is holding back its best troops and tanks for possible conflict with NATO: and points out that Zhukov did the same in 1941 at the gates of Moscow.

Well the Russians use 152mm laser guided artillery munition Krasnopol, developed in SSSR. UAV or ground reconnaisance illuminate target and send coordinates to the gun crew.

The observation of the Russian Army staying within the umbrella of the 400 Air Defense system is part of their methodology. Think back to the Israeli – Egyptian War of 1973 how the Egyptians captured the Suez Canal area and the Israeli Airforce was devastated trying to support the few Strongholds they had still in the Canal and the counter attack by their Armor. We the USA had to ship them ( Israel ) a huge number of fighter bombers mostly F4E(s) to replace their loses. However, do to the pressures from the Syrians that were loosing huge numbers of their Armor in the Golan Heights area they insisted that the Egyptians moved ahead of their Air defense protection deeper into the Sinai to draw away Israeli forces from the Golan Heights. The result was that the Egyptian Army was devastated by the Israeli Air Force and General Sharon was able to cross the Canal and surround the Egyptian Army on the Western side of the Canal. Lesson learned Lesson Kept. The Russians know they can’t match the West in numbers and quality of Air Assets but they can Neutralize them by having a first class Air Defense System. Their Army is based on the KISS System i.e. Keep It Simple Stupid lots of Artillery Rapid Armor when needed good Air Defense systems and well trained infantry with Generic supplies that last them for about a week before needing resupply. I fell in love with the Indian Army since the War for East Pakistan they were professional no nonsense attitude.

There is a slow but steady change going on in the Eastern European air forces – new Viper versions and MLU F16s from Western Europe are being introduced to Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Poland and Slovakia. The F15 would be too expensive to operate for these airforces and currently the European service network (and know how) for the F16 is still intact. The current conflict has sped up this process considerably. Stealing hard earned money from US working class people tend to do that. Thanks for your work Jacob I really appreciate it. Hi Jacob. Thanks for your valuable work. I appreciate it. About those planes… I’m Bulgarian and I have to admit this comes as quite the shock to me that we’ve given planes to Ukraine. I thought the Bulgarian Parliament voted “military help or assistance” meaning repairing tanks and such. Am I missing something? Also what is a bigger shock to me is where did those planes come from!? I checked Wikipedia and it’s pathetic, we owe nothing, and it’s been so for years. We even bought 8 F-16 from Uncle Sam, expected 2025. Our airspace is patrolled with planes from the Netherlands. But again, the parliament explicitly voted no military material. I went protesting in support of NO military material.
At the begging of the war, I read that a lot of planes were “running away” from the Ukrainian airspace because Russians were bombing them everywhere. Like 90 planes went to Poland, to Romania etc. So maybe some of those are coming back. Or maybe we just sent them old broken planes and they fixed them haha.

In early May, our parlament decided not to give weapons for Ukr. But we have militari facturies which sell to Nato countries end some thirtd countries (nothing havy, but many ammunitiоn). Aaaand these factories now works very hard (guess why). But we don’t “donate” anything OFFICIALLY.
About planes. All drama here start in early March, when polish Mig walked back and forth. The authorities start to denayd that we were asked to give our M29 and S300. Our president was stongly against. He is Bulgarian air force general. If some plane are mising, he will be the first who will know. And there is a lot of tension between the president and the government. He will ring the bell.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, naming the losses of Kyiv, reports only those whose bodies were collected. (they are very afraid of being accused of lying, so the figure is as accurate as possible) Thus, this figure must be multiplied by 2, since rockets and artillery strike at territories where it is impossible to collect and count the bodies. An average of 20,000 enemy corpses is collected per month – this is not accurate, but rather a general trend.
500 corpses * 90 days = 45,000 killed, while in addition to those killed, on average, the number of seriously wounded is equal to the number of deaths as a result of any hostilities. Since a high-explosive fragmentation projectile is very cruel.
Thus, Ukraine underestimates the losses.
Thus, by July 1, there should already have been, as a statistical expectation, about 60,000 killed and 60,000 seriously wounded. (I mean, any bowel lesion that takes at least 1 month to heal doesn’t mean it’s fatal.)
This is evidenced by the fact that instead of regular army soldiers, reservists and territorial defenders were increasingly captured (Google translates this as terrorists, but the word itself arose from the words territory + defense), which began actively from the end of May, because. the regular army of Ukraine then simply lost half of its composition.
As for the lightly wounded, they have already managed to recover and return to the front, and some even twice.
Thus, by the end of the month, according to statistics, there will be 80,000 killed and 80,000 seriously wounded, and among the first 20,000 seriously wounded there will be those who have recovered and are able to return to the front.
Also in the LDNR there were 8k prisoners and 6k prisoners in Russia. =14k sum. Videos with prisoners are quite common, I watched about a hundred, and I’m already tired of it.
As I told the other statistical expert gentleman here… The only “confimed” kills are what’s on photo or video, usually not more than several tens per day. There are certainly many more dead, but, not 10-20X more. Let’s ease up on the fantastical thinking.
I actually tend to agree with Dar Terran. Ukranian losses are way higher then they publicly say. Looks like Russian MoD numbers are purposefully vague. When MoD says “destroyed around 300 nationalists” they mean by a certain type of strikes. Usually they tell a number of destroyed troops by air forces, then they would follow by a number of of “enemy troop concentrations hit” by missiles strikes, not publishing any info about enemy casualties from artillery strikes or ground combat. I think in late march MoD officially declared “around 30 000 irretrievable losses” on Ukranian side. Obviously this one can be an utter bullcrap, but if we to believe Russian MoD, Ukranian losses are somewhere around 100 000 troops. There was a short clip from supposed Ukranian draftee (who is not a POW) where he claims, that there are no regular troops left, only draftees and reservists.

500-1000 is believable. Don’t just rely on the MoD count – those are “confirmed kills” only. Russia makes so many strikes per day by missile, aviation and artillery – hundreds. Do you think at least one Ukrainian soldier is standing near those strikes? Of course there is. They aren’t hitting empty trucks, tanks, command posts and “concentrations of manpower and equipment”. They probably get at least one killed or wounded Ukrainian per strike – certainly the majority of the strikes do. Count the strikes, not the reported killed. The MoD is very conservative.

If you ask our government, Bulgaria has not provided any weapons to Ukraine whatsoever, let alone aircraft. If that did happen despite all the claims of the opposite, it will blow in a big way.

I find it hard to believe that any airplanes came from Bulgaria. The weapons exports were banned by the parliament and the person that has to sign on any piece of hardware going out of the country is Korneliya Ninova the leader of the socialist party of Bulgaria, which is pro Russian. The refusal to supply weapons was officially announced during the Lloyd Austin visit in Sofia, by the Bulgarian premier Kiril Petkov on a joint conference on March 19 2022. There were MIG 29 on maintenance in Ukraine from before the special operation started (they were responsible for the maintenance of MIG 29) but as far as I am aware the repair facility was destroyed by Russian Kalibur missiles. There are current almost suicidal attacks by Ukraine near Kherson, Kharkiv, and North Donetsk. There is also also a criminal bombardment of civilians in Donetsk city. Background or ‘strategy’ (see various statements e.g. by NATO head Stoltenberg): NATO has given up on winning their proxy war and only wants to ‘improve the negociating position’.
Problems:
1) The ultra nationalists in Kiev prefer to fight to the last man, as does the neo-con ‘Chickenhawk’ faction in Washington.
2) The Ukrainians are attempting strategic attacks but have never mounted a successful attack at anything above battalion size (c. 1000) Even those successful attacks were often better characterised as Russian withdrawals, and were repulsed shortly later.
3) The Ukrainians are already very weak, have no air support, air defense, have lost most armour etc. so they will probably lose, making their negotiating position even weaker. (Hence the delivery of supposedly ‘game changer’ NATO heavy weapons)
4) The Ukrainians are suffering *incredible* loses mounting these hopeless attacks which are beyond their equipment, training and man power
So the latest attacks are like a poker player betting the farm while ‘drawing to an inside straight’ (the US plays poker, the Russians chess)
So what are the prospects of negotiations? Well happily negotiations are now almost certain to take place, because after the current attacks burn out, and massive loses and surrenders take place, NATO (the US) will probably throw in the towel if the objections of the ultras in Kiev and Washington can be overcome.
But then comes the next problem:
Russia probably will only accept the complete and unconditional ceding of all ‘Russian’ regions. That will include Odessa and Kharkiv, and probably Dnipro. Plus guaranteed neutrality for the rump.
This will be a complete humiliation for Kiev and Washington, who may then contemplate another ‘surge’. (Remember Afghanistan?)

Ukraine war is going to end exactly like the movie Aliens. Russians are the aliens. Ukraine/NATO are the Colonial Marines. Russians will completely destroy the Ukraine/NATO forces. Zelensky will flee to this $35 million mansion in Miami, while all his Azov nazi associates will dead. Just like Sigourney Weaver fled in her lifeboat, while everyone else who was with her got killed by the aliens.
