You live in (or hail from) the only east European, NATO countries (besides Poland) that still supposedly have (or recently had) Soviet-built, manned, fixed-wing combat aircraft in their military inventories.
Over 100 days into its Very Special Military Operation, Russia is still shooting down 1, 2, or even 3 Ukrainian, Soviet-built, manned, fixed-wing combat aircraft, almost every day.
If you’re convinced the Ukraine did not receive any kind of aerospace “donations” from your countries, could you please suggest another explanation? I am open to suggestions. Should I be looking at Poland? The Russians seem to think it’s you.

Since the Brits say they consider the Donetsk folk to be Ukrainian, why did they arrest a Russian? Is this the same logic as trying to swap a Ukrainian politician for Ukrainian soldiers? These people make my head hurt.

(Bulgarian) As a fellow citizen suggested in the previous article we have a lot of MiGs and Su around 150, but 90% of them are none operational, maybe some of them are send to Ukraine. The air defense in Bulgaria is provided by 10 Nederland’s f35(which have at least 2 daily patrols, for the past month and that have never happened before).
And remark from the previous article. Bulgaria prepaid around 10 f16s 2 years ago to uncle Sam and probably would never received them with expected delivery date around 2030. We wont received anything(maybe our politicians will) from all the financial support against Russia.

I am Bulgarian and have been living in England for about 10 years now. To the best of my knowledge Bulgaria doesn’t have the facilities to repair those old Russian Migs and Sus. And I seriously doubt it’s as easy as making 1 functional plane out of 10 broken ones. I vaguely remember from the news a few years ago that we are sending our old Migs to Poland for repairs because we are too cheap to send them to Russia. Being the poor country that we are all of these would be at least 30 years old and way past their expiration date. I doubt we have even 10 working ones – maybe 5 at best and the pilots who fly them don’t get enough flying hours and are dreadfully unprepared. That and the planes are old clunkers – and on a related note we lost our last remaining military helicopter a few years ago when it was used to stop a forest fire. I haven’t paid attention to Bulgarian news in the last 3-4 years though so don’t quote me on that.

The SU-25 attack planes allegedly received by Ukraine are not from Bulgaria. (Ministry of Defence statement) May 27.
This information does not correspond to the truth, according to the Ministry of Defense, about the information of the American edition Foreign Policy and the Polish Defense.pl. They say that Ukraine received 14 SU-25 attack aircraft, but dismantled. The only country in the former Eastern bloc that has this type of attack aircraft is Bulgaria, and our aircraft are exactly 14.
However, according to the Ministry of Defense, this information was hybrid (their word???) and it was not even worth discussing.

I really suggest that you look as a source of SU 25 to Georgia and the unfriendly (to Russia) Caucasian republics. The “donor” does not have to be NATO country, could be someone with inspirations to become one.

SU25 most likely from Bulgaria. No other country in Eastern Europe are using them as far as I know – Romania has their own locally produced ground attack aircraft, Poland has some SU22s. MIG29s – parts and aircrafts could come from both Poland and Slovakia.
The last comment didn’t show up so I’ll try again. Bulgaria used to send our old Migs to Poland for repairs because they were undercutting the prices of the official Russian suppliers. As far as aging aircraft go, the US is still flying B-52’s that are 60+ years old, as well as upgraded (engines) KC-135’s, C-130’s, and the “retired” Navy P-3 Orion’s are being overhauled for the US Customs and Border Patrol at Cecil (Field) Commerce Center.

I liked some of the aspects of this satire but overall I prefer your more straight forward factual analysis of the Russia Ukraine conflict.
Before these two twits were captured and tried in Donetsk, I did warn folks that those who visited the DPR & LPR should have a look at their laws and legal system. (I’m a 60 year old housewife, so of course no one listened.)
My analysis (correct me if I’m wrong) is as follows:
1. Since almost no government save Russia recognizes the existence of the DPR & LPR, how would your government even begin to negotiate with the DPR or LPR for your repatriation?
2. Interesting things happen when the rest of the world refuses to recognize a new nation as a sovereign state. I don’t think the DPR or LPR have ratified the Geneva Conventions. Given how they’ve been treated, why would they? So if you’re thinking the rules of the Geneva Convention apply when you are shooting at people and damaging property in the DPR & LPR, you are probably wrong.
3. If you’re thinking Russia will bring pressure to bear against the DPR or LPR court to let a murderer or vandal go free, then you are (again) probably wrong. I can think of dozens of good reasons why the Russians would respect DPR & LPR sovereignty, even if it means the convict goes to the gallows.
Again, if you think I’m wrong, correct me. I’m not a lawyer or authority on international law.
I’ve been watching the DPR & LPR from the beginning, because I became very interested in the question of which regional groups were allowed to form new states, how and why. In my opinion, it’s unreasonably difficult to form a new nation. The older nations’ resistance to recognizing the DPR & LPR may in part have been a decision to discourage other breakaway republics around the world. Whatever the case may be, there are consequences to this resistance to recognizing young nations.
You forgot how west was eager to recognize Kosovo? so it is no problem, as long as you wish to be US puppet or it harms Russia.

Speaking of captures, Severodonetsk’s Atov plant has seen the start of the coming mass surrender. The first group came out today. Reportedly, there are as many as 2500 troops in Atov, 20-25% of which are foreign. If the 2 Brits are a precedent, we’re looking at ~500 trials of foreign mercs in the coming months. Quite a legal saga approaching…
I have to say that the death sentence being imposed on what amounts to naive volunteers doesn’t work for me. Volunteers are fighting on both sides of this conflict (EG: the Syrians fighting for Donetsk & Lugansk). The category “Mercenary” has a legal definition under Art. 47 of the Geneva Convention. My reading of that Article seems to exclude both of the Brits in this case. War crimes and crimes against humanity are another matter, of course. In such cases, it matters not whether one is a mercenary under the definition or not, but I’ve haven’t seen anything indicating that they actively participated in war crimes.
Then there’s the argument that if a guaranteed death sentence awaits, why surrender? And why not indulge in the most heinous war crimes (if that’s one’s bent) while fighting? Seems counter-productive to me.

Answering your and other’s replies, the DPR/LPR and Russia have laid claim to the moral high ground by stating that all cases will be treated on their merits in accordance with “international humanitarian norms”. Of course, the Geneva Convention forms a fundamental part of those norms and this judgement, IMHO harms those claims in the eyes of many of the Donbas’ long time sympathizers.
The Donetsk court’s sentence not only ignores Geneva, but by so lowering the bar for the ultimate penalty it effectively lumps the actions of gullible grunts with the worst of the criminally insane NaHTZeeS when they are obviously qualitatively different. In equating them, the court opens itself to the charge of exacting a victor’s petty vengeance rather than justice. Put another way, it smacks of “Kill ’em all, and let God sort it out”. Insofar as the Donbas will soon be a part of the Russia Federation, this reflects on Russia at a critical juncture in the creation of its “Fairer World Order”. Lousy signal, lousy timing.
Justice is more than black letter law, and much more than legalistic/arbitrary twisting of definitions. Better to put ’em to work repairing Donbas’ schools, hospitals and govt buildings for a decade. I’d wager they’d work like 10 men. One hopes the Crimean Tribunals will set more nuanced standards and come to wiser judgements.

As for “volunteers” – LPR and DPR are not in obligation to honor Geneva convention , since they never signed it (although , they behave as they did). In those cases , sentencing has a political weight (by theirs opinion) and serve the purpose of deterring people to “volunteer” against their republics , but , it can be , also , connected to specific deeds of the convicts during 8 years of conflict (or whatever time they spent there). Their premise (LPR and DPR ) is – if they took weapons and used them against LPR and DPR soldiers and or civilians , prior getting Ukrainian passports (or without them) – they ARE mercenaries.

There are no Syrians fighting for Donetsk & Lugansk or any other nationality. You can apply only with RU,DPR,LPR passport. They are more trouble than they are worth. Syrians offered to fight but were refused. No new foreigners.

Larry Johnson’s blog details that there has been something like 6,000 foreign fighters in Ukraine though. In the context of this war, where infantry on the ground do not seem so numerous, such a contingent is quite a boost to Ukraine’s fighting forces. If “volunteering” had got greater traction as a fake moral crusade (and felt within an acceptable “risk” envelope) then one could easily have seen that number growing by a factor with ex soldiers (or soldiers on “leave”) from across the west jumping on.
Russia’s response to treat them as war criminals therefore feels a rational choice. They no doubt realize that this may mean that existing foreigners are super reluctant to surrender. Which is counter productive. But they probably figure that the deterrent effect to prevent more coming and to encourage existing ones to leave is a better trade off. Tricky decision and I have no idea if they are making the smartest call here or not.
No doubt there is genuine outrage too, that we ought not to discount. The definition of war crimes has always been very fungible and inconsistent. If Germany had won WW2 then it was well understood that Sir Arthur Harris of RAF Bomber Command would have been treated as one. Instead, we have a statue of him.

Sources from the Russian military intelligence say about a special operation at the airfield Gostomel, where the cargo plane An-225 Mriya was parked. That together with the Airborne Forces there almost 200 operators of the Force Special Operation RF (best of elite Russian spetsnaz of about 1,000 fighters on all Russia), and that as soon as something valuable and toxic (leaving radiation traces) was removed by special forces from Gostomel, Putin gave a command to withdraw all troops from the vicinity of Kiev. It is noteworthy that after the Ukrainian troops entered Gostomel, Kiev sawed off the head of the An-225 Mriya and took it to an unknown direction for disposal (probably the part of the plane where there were still radiation traces).

I think the mercenaries punishment is related to the trial of Russians for “War Crimes”. That always seemed more a part of US led info war or hybrid war than a real war crime. The Russian POW’s should be treated as vanilla POWs. As should volunteers, contractors and the usual hired hands. eg The Wagner Group.
I notice that other Brit, Andrew Hill, captured near Mykolaiv at the end of April (a couple of weeks after Pinner and Aislan at Mariopol), hasn’t been put forward for trial yet. Seems to have dropped off the radar.

I’d read somewhere that one of the Brit prisoners (not googly eyed Ass-lin, but the other one) had lived in the Ukraine previously for 2 years and was married to a Ukranian. If so, then (as much as I despise mercenaries)he is domiciled at law as a Ukranian and as such should not be tried extraordinarily.

I don’t believe she has gone to visit him, or even contacted him on his YT channel which the DPR forces have allowed him to air. Strange thing to do, to move to a foreign nation for love, then leave her to join her nations army, and the cow won’t even send you a Red Cross parcel.
It’s a stock answer, I have yet to see any of these guys provide proof of marriage, income or civilian residence etc in Ukraine. Did they move to the Ukraine to work as male order brides for desperate Ukrainian women, or is that the stock answer that their paymasters have come up with?
I am skepticial of all these eastern european posters who claimed they know the status of their govt air force inventory and their involvement in the donation to ukraine regime. and i doubly suspect the posters who said their govt would never give fighters to ukraine (for whatever reason) , because they have no data on their own govt’s air force status (including readiness , parts inventory , etc) except from public sources which are notoriously unreliable.

While I favor the use of the death penalty for heinous crimes both here in the US and abroad (I am Catholic and, unlike the current rather odd pope, I know this punishment is and always has been morally licit in Catholic teaching), I make no judgement on the wisdom of dispatching the captured mercenaries. I would, however, like to suggest a minor correction. Unless I’m misled by sources I’ve seen, the DPR and LPR do not hang criminals, they execute them by firing squad. It happens that this is my preferred manner of state executions; it is both quicker and less costly, as well as surer. (I detest the pretend medical nature of executions by lethal injection.)
I’m Catholic also, and I don’t recall being taught the death sentence was ‘licit’. And forgive those who trespass against us, and deliver us all from evil.
I’m ex military and don’t partake in woke nonsense or be nice to people who are not nice to me, but I don’t blame the religion of my parents for my aggressive behaviours. I’ve tried to be a good Catholic since I had kids, conjugal rights and duties and all that, there’s good with bad, and I get to tell my kids how to grow up proper and all that.

I’d agree with the death penalty, if it was guaranteed every time to kill only the guilty, but there are far too many cases of false, unsafe or corrupted convictions against people all over the world. The Birmingham Six, Guildford Seven would all have been executed with the death penalty if it was available, and the convicting judge said he would gladly have applied it if he could.
I would not be able to live with myself if I had been a juror or judge who put those people to death, they were all set up by a powerful bureaucracy who cheated their way to a conviction of innocent people for the most heinous of crimes. All the media said they did it at the time, it took decades for the real evidence to surface, when a records officer released data he shouldn’t have.

Anyone who knows how the American criminal justice system functions, and is still in favor of the death penalty, must have a ton of money. A ton of money can buy alot of lawyers and judges, and no need to think about those with less money, ever.
Then you were taught wrong. Capital punishment is and always has been morally licit in Catholic teaching. The fact that it can be wrongly administered is beside the point, something you should have learned in basic catechism class. No pope can change this fact unless he wants to proclaim outright heresy, ditto for laymen like you and me.
I am Slovak living in Bulgaria and as far as know Slovakia already gave basically everything we had: one s300 battery, few mig29 -max 2 able to fight and 5-6 for cannibalization (currently is Poland taking care of defence of our airspace), 20 self-propelled howitzers, few MI helicopters etc.

From a tactical perspective, it would be nice to know exactly how China takes Taiwan.

The point of my original questions is from 19 February – 26 March 1945, it took the Americans 12 Aircraft carriers, 14 Battleships, 7 Troop Transports numerous attack transports, landing ships, support ships etc, in excess of 600 ships in total with over a hundred of them large capital ships to land 70K marines and equipment onto Iwo Jima to face down 20k very well dough in Japanese soldiers. All the while, they had absolute air and sea dominance. And still, the US lost 7K marine in this battle. So I’m wondering how the Chinese are going to be able to pull off an invasion of the much larger island of Taiwan? Let’s say they manage to land 100K troop with heavy equipment, how are they going to keep them supplied?

The final sum of prisoners, as told officially by Pushilin (Prime Minister of DNR) at the completion of the “evacuation” of Azovstal, was 2.439, which aligns closely to the POW disparity discussed. Perhaps some things have changed since that time, but the intention is for all the Azovstal holdouts to face tribunal (e.g. Nuremberg) in DNR.
I don’t think all ~2.500 will be executed–most will probably get hard labor rebuilding Mariupol, but I do think there will easily be triple digits put to death–though capital punishment will probably be sought initially in most cases, including the entirety of the Azov Battalion. And lastly, it is not only optics that require this to happen in DNR, but legally, too, since the Russian Federation does not have capital punishment, and if anything, President Putin would face criticism at home if some of these prisoners got off light (aka alive).
