Folks, a note regarding those who said that the Ukrainian soldiers shown in the videos on my two prior posts, looked like civilian militia and generally pathetic. Yes, I know one of them (in my last post) had quite a belly. The rest could have been “real” soldiers or at least “legitimate” reservists, we just don’t know.
Let me tell you, if you were to take any infantry squad from the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, take away their shaving gear for a few days, don’t feed them properly (or at all) for a few days, deny them sleep, perhaps give them a sunburn, and take away all their “battle rattle” and strip them down to their dirty pants and sweaty t-shirts…..
…..Some of them would look a lot like heroin junkies, or like these Ukrainian prisoners. As would you and I. In short, prisoners always look pathetic. They almost never look like killers, although some of them are.

FWIW, below are photos of vehicles confiscated from the Ukrainians for their naughty behavior in the Lisichansk sector, including three BTR wheeled APC’s (one at the far right of the first photo, easy to miss), one not-very-modern tank, and a number of trucks, at least three of them with command or electronics modules in the back.
This does not look to be “prime quality” gear (the BTR’s for example are not the modernized variety that the Ukraine started the war with), but, the Ukrainians don’t have much fancy stuff (or any stuff) left that’s not recently Western-donated.
Also, for those who haven’t heard, the Russian side recently claimed to have taken two intact French-supplied CAESAR cannon trucks, although no visual documentation was provided.

Just a reminder that I think all this war bullsh*t will be forgotten once a more deadly form of the ko-ro-na appears, which will “target” and kill those (of course, not everyone) who are vakk-synn-ay-tted with the jeen the-rah-pee shawtz, especially those who are “heavily” vakk-synn-ay-tted (i.e. boooss-ttedd once or twice or more often.)
This (among other coterminous problems and crises) will strain our society to the breaking point, making the initial 2020 ko-ro-na outbreak look like the vacation that it was (for many office workers, at least.)
My guess is this could blow up anytime between now and 9-10 months from now, not later than that.

Two coworkers and I were standing in front of a map of Europe (some marketing thing) last week. The other American was casually discussing breaking up the Russian Federation. I asked the Russian one (no friend of Putin) how that made him feel, “because if it were me I’d want to kick his ass.”

Just wondering effect on Russian progress regarding dealing with many thousands of surrendering combatants with mixed motives (nationals, Bandera believers, mercenaries, reservists,…) in a battle zone (containing boobytraps) with varying weapons. I think this practice is despicable, the Geneva Convention should and will stand for Ukrainian POWs. The only issue is the fate of mercenaries, I am in favor of sentencing them to labor camps as opposed to executing them, but I guess Russia wants to discourage others from swelling their ranks. NATO could potentially raise a foreign army over 100,000 strong, given how prevelant anti-Russian propaganda has been across the “free world”.
So Luhansk will be finished soon. As we all know, many are predicting Russia will liberate all the southeast regions, but leave a small, rump western Ukraine.
Let’s say Russia does in fact do that. Let’s say Russia does indeed leave western Ukraine to its own devices…

I don’t see how any of this can truly be solved unless Russia takes *all* of Ukraine, which means occupying massive lands filled with people who hate Russia and want vengeance (yes, eastern Ukrainians like Russia, but western ukrainians don’t).
And occupying all this hostile land will be its own problem… In fact, that could be very difficult for Russia. In fact, it could be disastrous for Russia. Could that even be part of the west’s plans? Western ukraine as a poison pill?
At the outset, Russia explicitly stated that it will de-nazify and de-militarize Ukraine, but has no intention to occupy it.
Things have changed, and my guess today is that the latter phrase has to now be modified by appending the phrase “… in the long-term”.
FWIW, I projected a ~2 yr time window at the outset. That now looks optimistic, but however it plays out, it will play out in the context of a dramatically shifting geo- economic/financial/political situation. The West’s global ambitions will lose traction as its various domestic crises develop into an avalanche of troubles while the “Global South” (et al) develop new, alternative structures to replace it.
Its political elites will naturally have to cast their focus on staying upright as they ski down that hill, and any grand plans of reviving the Ukrainian operation will fly into the face of a fully active Russian program. IOW, they’d be forced to try to ski up a 2nd hill while skiing down the first. Given the leadership skills they’ve displayed to date, not gonna happen.

Jacob I heard that 2500 or more troops from Fort Campbell are being deployed to Poland…not good. What I actually heard was 25K but I find that hard to believe. However there is not a hotel room to be had in and around Clarksville and Nashville for 100 miles so maybe.
From what I have seen, and heard from others in Russia, it had something to do with American aircraft possibly/nearly entering the airspace of China, on accident. Which happens probably more than we ever know, but also a not so smart flight plan at a time like this, especially after your politicians openly embrace war with the Russian Federation and China. (It’s like no one remembers 1960 U-2 incident–too many chances for dumb mistakes with no great payoff.)

French journalist,Régis de Castelnaud reported 2 Caesar self-propelled guns captured by Russian troops, while several Indian press, probably copying each other have reported that the Ukrainian crews sold them to the Russians. This should be fun.
Alexander Mercouris also reported this although he said that it was Russian telegram channels who were saying that the Ukrainians had sold the Caesar guns to the Russians

Saw that. Definitely worth watching. I agree that a lot of the questions displayed the low caliber within today’s academia. However, I thought the YouTube comments were overly harsh. A few of the questions struck me as well-reasoned and articulate. By far the worst was the professor wearing the orange running shorts. He rambled a bunch of incoherent thoughts. Besides that, couldn’t he have put on a pair of trousers and a polo shirt? His lack of gravitas made the contrast with Mearsheimer (in a suit and tie) that much more glaring. But then, I suppose Zelensky is the model for gravitas these days, shedding his statesman’s suit and tie for olive-green military fatigues to play a man-in-the-trenches wartime leader 24/7. The mystery of the old T-62 tanks has been solved and it’s true they have been delivered! Only to south ossetia forces not Russian regular forces. I’m guessing they were getting routine overhauled in Russia. There is a couple videos of the delivery with Zs to boot. Maybe we can get Germany to deliver some leopards to Ukraine and south ossetia can get an upgrade in the future?

So, how can one evaluate the situation in Severodoneszk and the Lishizhansk Region? When I read some of the Russian sources they argued that a success would be if they could encircle the Ukrainian forces in full and take them off the map entirely. That didn’t happen. The Ukrainians did manage to move some of their forces back. So, overall, is this a success for Ukraine or a success for the Russian Forces or a Draw?

The Fed can’t tame inflation with interest rates without wrecking the economy and getting the blame for it. But my question relates to your prediction of a return of ko-ro-na in more deadly form. I read a lot of the science, both pro-narrative and alterrnative. The latter is usually the more informed. Nowhere do I see them making the kind of prediction you are making. Even the great Geert Vanden Bossche has gone a bit quiet on his predicitons of a severe strain inducing the kind of scenario you seem to be describing.
So my simple question is, on what do you base this prediction? If not your own scientific understanding, perhaps you have some credible sources? And secondly, do you think there will be any form of treatment that will be of value? For the record, I have medical credentials, I have not taken any genetic/immune therapy injections, I have recently had an infection of Oh-my-krone, which was a very mild illness but I took the banned (in this country) early treatment, with good effect. So I should have some degree of protection if your prediction comes to pass. But I am curious, what is the basis for your prediction?

Reality check. Real wars are fought with conscripts and the trigger pullers are uniformly late adolescent males in the 18 to 21 year age range. Yes, the NOCs are a little older, but not by much. Even the platoon lieutenants and company captains are mid to late 20s. Look at those videos from yesterday again and you will see that most appear quite a bit older, even accounting for time at the front. Most of Ukraine’s young men fled to Poland and Romania back in late February and early March in order to avoid service, thus the “conscripts” that got caught were the middle-aged dads that stayed behind to protect their families. Ukraine is NOT fielding a real army. They are just throwing meat into a grinder and couldn’t care less about the lives being lost. They are just making a lot of widows and orphans, and that is a crime of monumental proportions.

I’m no financial wizard (ergo, take everything I say with a pinch of salt), but with Biden announcing an agreed G7 embargo on Russian gold, and factoring in the track record of sanctions thus far (see above), Au (and by extention titanium/palladium) investing might be an easier route (less restricted/complicated) than purchasing stocks in Russia.
Besides, right now the Russians aren’t happy with the current ₽/$ strength, and you could take a hell of a hit in the short term if they cut interest rates to weaken it to 70₽/$, which is about what Nabiullina & Co see as optimum.

The big difference I’m seeing in this war is that neither side can gain tactical surprise except at a low (squad-platoon-company) level. The second you get to the operational level, surprise is impossible. Between recon satellites and the omnipresent drones, the enemy sees every major move you try to make. This is, sometimes, supplemented by idiots (or spies) with cellphones but both sides have cracked down on that since the war began. Still there’s no way to get rid of all the drones and there’s nothing either side can do about the recon sats in orbit.
So what does this leave? It leaves a grinding war of attrition which Kiev can’t win and Moscow can’t lose.
The Russian fire direction and artillery staff is very much magnified by the relative immobility of the front. Kiev has kindly been feeding their men and materiel into the meatgrinder, which is by now very practiced, very well established and verywell supplied. The recent strikes on the ersatzarmee are timed to perfection, essentially decapitating them just as they are preparing to deploy and thus wasting weeks of training.
Russia stands to gain 10-15 million people and very rich and productive land. Much like Catherine, it will be (re)populated by immigrants.
Very interested to hear ideas on trading a potential increase in illness. Just anecdotally, many coworkers are moderately sick with said malady currently, bewstead people.
