Early this morning (local time), a new or reconstituted unit of the Ukrainian special forces (likely UK-trained and organized, as the original Ukrainian special forces have almost all been killed off or hospitalized) attempted a river-borne landing to seize control of the Russian-held Zaporozhie Atomic Energy Station, the largest nuclear plant in Europe, just hours before the station was due to be visited by a senior delegation from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA.)
The landing was to involve at least two waves. Russia was aware of the plans and killed almost the entire first wave (also taking a few prisoners) on their beachhead, a few kilometers from the reactors, while sinking or otherwise killing the second wave on the water, and attacking by air a potential third wave at their point of origin. At least 200, possibly 300 of the most elite Ukrainian personnel were killed or otherwise knocked out of action within just a few hours.
It’s not clear how the Ukrainians intended to run the nuclear power station even if they did seize it, seeing as everyone who works there, commutes to and from their homes in nearby, Russian-held Energodar (which BTW took some damage from “imprecise” Ukrainian artillery that was trying to support the landing.) And you know, all it takes is one tired worker to push the wrong button, as at Chernobyl…..
In short, the scheme was totally harebrained and insane. It is likely the operation was planned with the help of the British (SAS or whatever)—the USA would not do anything this stupid (feel free to disagree, leave a comment.)
For those of you who were wondering why Russia never bombed the Ukrainian Armed Forces HQ or Ukraine Security Service HQ in Kiev, here’s your answer. You don’t bomb your own spies and informants.

I’m afraid I have to disagree with you on one point, the US State Department actually is that stupid. And even the shoulder-to-shoulder-chest-full-of-ribbons generals who got where they are by being yes-men, will go along with it, even if they secretly know it is stupid. I haven’t had a lot of respect for the Pentagon generals since I was in the Air Force during the Vietnam war and saw how they went along with bonehead policies promulgated by ignoramuses who didn’t care about American blood.
The Russians claim that they have been tracking these Ukrainian commandos since they were being trained in the UK, and we’re monitoring their movements since they entered Ukraine from Poland. (As usual, some grains of salt required with reports from any side in a war.)

A very useful update. There is some discussion that one of the reasons the Russian Forces have not taken Donbas is because they are now in a stalemate with the Ukraine military. The Russians and their allies lack the infantry numbers to finish the job. Jacob, what do you think?
I think you misread the situation if you think there is stalemate. The Russians main purpose is to reduce the Ukrainian military, not primarily territorial gain. Day to day operation in Donbas involves reducing Ukrainians and then using the infantry to clean up when the opposition has faded away. It is a great way to minimise the attacking side’s casualties and make slow but steady progress.
My compliments to you for two important observations:
1) how were they going to run the plant if they had succeeded?
2) bombing Kiev’s military and security services HQs would risk killing the informants.

As a Brit myself I could totally believe this was a half-assed operation supported and trained by the U.K. As someone who was in the RN during the Falklands war, I saw first hand and heard stories of British incompetence. It seems some things never change.

I’m a citizen of the second most pathetic nation in the Anglosphere (Canada). The UK has now pulled well into the lead as the winner of that prize. The nonsense coming out of the political and military leadership in the UK around the Ukraine catastrophe is appalling and would be laughable if it wasn’t so tragic (for the Ukraine of course but also for all the fine citizens of the British Isles). While the leadership here in Canada is full of the same inane rhetoric as in the UK, deep down everybody in Canada know that we’re militarily irrelevant on the world stage and our PM is nothing more than a globalist show pony. Apart from carrying on like the 51st state of the USA, Canada has no meaningful influence on the big geopolitical questions of the day. On the other hand, it appears that many within the UK seem to genuinely believe that Britannia still rules the seas. Why not accept that the British Empire ended more than a century ago and focus on looking after the fine people and beautiful places that make up the lovely little island that is Great Britain?

Dima on the Military Summary Channel speculates that this attack was in co ordination with the west and was supposed to be timed with the arrival of the inspection team. The Russians pulled back their troops from the plant making it easier to capture it using the UN inspectors as willing human shields. And I don”t doubt it one bit.

One more point of not bombing the leadership areas. I remember the issue with killing Hitler in WW 2. The Brits came to the realization that it was better to have him alive and screw things up for his own forces than take a chance on a more competent leader that could make things harder for the allies. So Zelensky is the best secret weapon the Russian Federation has and he just keeps on giving. While the Ukranian people and military get destroyed.

Went about as well as most commando raids during ww2. No doubting the bravery of those involved, but what a bloody mess. Seems like it was planned by someone who read too many Commando Comics (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commando_(comics)).
I don’t know if leaks are required. Ukrainian telegram is hot that there must be a leak “because the Russians knew the whole plan!”, but the response looks more impromptu.
The initial landing in rubber boats got some men several km inland after it was initially spotted and attacked at the landing site.
The barges were spotted in the river, but they were on a leisurely cruise and apparently quite large, the river is wide and modern optics are not terrible.
It looks more like it was a daft plan, Russian troops were on edge because of the IAEA visit and expecting provocations, and the commandos got spotted.
The response should look plausibly impromptu when acting on intelligence gathered by spies and informants.
Even more so if you’re trying to plant the idea that you have informants everywhere when you haven’t….

Brits are at heart also the most racist of all the Western peoples I have interacted with, and the most butt hurt and haughty.

One begins to wonder how much is too much for the Ukraine military. The costly “counter-offensive” and this ill-conceived commando exercise in futility have resulted in huge losses in personel. Not to mention the considerable daily casualties inflicted on Ukraine by the merciless Russian artillery . Is there not one single Ukrainian general with the stones to put an end to this nonsense and give Zelenski his walking papers? If this war lasts much longer, there is going to be a significant shortage of Ukrainian men to procreate, similar to what the Soviet Union experienced post WW2.

That was my Thinking exactly. For this Operation to have made even a Particle of Sense, the IAEA Inspectors would have had to be in on it…(even though the entire Team was vetted by the Russians). Where I was wrong was not being able to believe Anyone on the Ukrainian Side could be so stupid
When you say they were vetted by the Russians exactly what do you mean by that? If flashing a name badge gets you inside the Plant that is hardly what I call being ‘vetted’.
These are high-level experts from various neutral countries, and each one was cleared individually in talks between Russia and the IAEA.

Ukraine is now reduced to attempting Hail Mary passes into the endzone from 80 yards out and hoping for a miracle. Meanwhile, the Russians have assembled a new corps at Rostov on Don which is waiting in the wings for assignment and deployment. So a perfect storm is brewing. The Ukrainian military has shot its wad and now the cupboard is bare. Where and when will Shoigu unleash this hammer blow in Ukraine, and to what effect? It’s time for all the armchair generals to step up to the chalk board and game plan the next Battle of Kursk. Supposedly, this new corps includes up to 40,000 fresh troops supported by several battalions of the new T-90s, which have yet to be seen in action on any battlefield. Its going to get very ugly very soon, and the number of Ukrainian widows and orphans is about to skyrocket. Is there no limit to the insanity?

Dima on the Military Summary Channel covered in detail a few days ago, but you can google Russian 3rd Army Corps and get lots of links. Latest info is that the formation phase has been completed and its now being outfitted for combat deployment. That only happens when roll out is near term. Big question is . . . are they headed to the Donbas arc or to spearhead the break toward Odessa?
Sorry, never heard of this guy or his facts. I googled it, and the first thing that came up was a Wikipedia entry with claims sourced to dubious outlets including a Russian opposition website in Georgia. You don’t send something the size of a new untrained volunteer “corps” into battle as an integral whole, it would be just a pile of useless meat. Yes, there are many volunteer batallions (of dubious quality) ready to go to wherever meat is needed to plug holes, but not a “corps” that will be moving in its own direction. That’s just silly.
I suppose that it could be an elaborate disinformation campaign, but Dima has been largely correct about most of his reporting thus far and the existence of a corps sized formation is likely to be easily discernible from satellite and aerial surveillance of the Rostov on Don region; so if a deception, it should be easy to debunk. As best I can tell, no one is denying it’s existence, not even Ukraine. The only doubt seems to be related to size, with some estimates at 15,000 and others at 40,000.

Dima is not always right (tough , he knows a lot of stuff regarding military and military history). Riba (telegram channel) are right 90% of time (there are few persons behind that channel) , but even they get it wrong sometimes , or jump the gun (in terms of capturing some settlements , or confusing one , for another , since there are villages with the same name in Ukraine , sometimes , not far from each other).
There are volunteer units in Rostov (and elsewhere) , mainly from Kherson and Zaporozhye regions (not sure about numbers) , but they are training for more than 4 months (if not five) to be used , when front in those regions moves on further , in order to relieve pressure from Rosgvardia , in keeping security there. I have no doubt that they will be controlled by Russian military professionals , with some smaller numbers of professional units around “just in case”. I really doubt that they will be used in direct confrontations with Ukrainians in any circumstances.
As for T-90’s tanks , there are some there – around Rostov (I’ve heard it from reliable independent source) , but I don’t know their number (or unit/units) , nor if those will be used in Ukraine and for what.
Russians tend to not advertise their military plans.
The idea was probably to create a propaganda victory at any cost.
It might appear in MSM, but they will never tell you who actually did what. So because we’re being fed daily with how well the Ukrainians are doing, no doubt those captured by MSM will think those stupid Ruskies attempted to seize the nuclear plant, while the dear Ukrainians thwarted the attempt by killing them off. That will teach those Ruskies to shell the plant and attempt to cause a nuclear disaster.
This attempted takeover of ZNPP was simply another attempt by the U gov’t to control the narrative. Once it was clear that the inspectors would arrive and expose the truth about who was responsible for the airborne devices disrupting the plant, the U gov’t had no choice – to control the narrative, it was necessary to control the inspectors and to control the inspectors it was necessary to control the plant. This is a desperate act. The inspectors will expose the fact that the U gov’t has been telling untruths. Hard to continue toward cannonization when the potential saint is discovered to be unsaintly. After this hideous political farce of a conflict is over, it will be hard to gain concensus about which mistake gets the stupid award. I nominate the U gov’t kinetic disruption of ZNPP.
When I was a kid growing up in Canada, there was a sitcom on Fox called Married With Children. In this one scene, a wife tells her husband the Sun is going to blow up in 24 hours and destroy all life on Earth. He immediately criticizes her for not telling him earlier, so he could go out looting. I found that scene hilarious, because it was so absurd and unbelievable.
Well, I’m 46 years old now, and I’ve lived to see the day when that scene would play out in real life all across the world. People don’t act this stupidly for no reason. No one is that greedy or naturally apathetic. You see, the present behavior of people all across the world isn’t a new way of doing things. It’s how people act when they know something is terribly wrong and that everything is about to collapse. They don’t know when it will happen, but they know it’s going to happen soon, and that frees them of all their inhibitions and makes them act like greedy imbeciles. It’s just a matter of time now. Not even that much time, really. It’s like that old movie On The Beach. We’re all just waiting for the world to end, and we know it’s going to happen very soon. I’m 71, turning 72 this month, and I remember the Cuban Missile Crisis. I was a news junkie even then. The ICBMs, had been halfway elevated out of their silos to make them quicker to fire. The winners and losers of this conflict are settled, now it’s just further totally pointless psychotic slaughter of mainly Ukrainains for various political, PR spin or whatever other BS reasons. But the potential for the whole thing to literally go nuclear is very real and increasingly likely. Hopefully they don’t decide to let the IAEA inspection team through and pull an equally insane stunt on them that they can somehow try to blame on the Russians. Nothing would surprise at this stage.

The danger from nuclear material and rectors has been overblown for decades now. You shouldn’t eat that stuff though. Films like HBO’s Chernobyl have created a farcical hyperbolical picture of the danger. I was 18 at the time and society in Germany went hysterical. Only the immediate suroundings of a power plant are in any real danger of high concentrations and where Fallout comes down from rain.
