I’ve EXTENSIVELY reviewed the new “chatbot” from OpenAI (funded by Elon Musk among others), and it is TERRIFYING.
But first, my take on the USA’s unprecedented, total political dominance of Europe (never so strong even during the Cold War)…..
……and confusion over how far to push the Ukraine thing, vs. how fast to shift to China/Taiwan as the main focus.

Of course, it’s not a “moral” issue. It wasn’t an issue at all, until Uncle realized he was running out of missiles, LOL.
Well, evidently…..
…..the Ukrainian army didn’t internalize “the message.”
Reportedly aiming to kill the Russian-installed, civilian head of largely Russian-controlled Zaporozhie province…..
…..it shot six missiles at the restaurant / banquet hall building (located on the grounds of the Prival Okhotnika rural hotel complex, near Melitopol)…..
…..where he was supposed to be celebrating his birthday.
Some of the missiles (coming in almost exactly at their effective range limit)…..
…..were shot down, but the ones that got through…..
…..killed at least two civilians and injured at least eight more in the general area.
Fortunately, per the couple in the below video (they either work at the site, or own it, not clear)…..
…..the building was mostly empty at the time.
It seems “the target” was not inside the building at the time.
Even had he been, the guy has his own local security squad, it’s unlikely he’s followed everywhere by a Russian army bodyguard detail.
Will Uncle Sam be pleased with this use of his resources?
Probably not, but it looks like “the inmates” just couldn’t resist.
No wonder Uncle Sam, still, after over nine months, has given them NOTHING that could hit deep within Russia…..
…..(that is, beyond GMLRS/HIMARS range….. and even the GMLRS, they’ve been ordered not to fire into Russia’s pre-2014 borders.)
Sure, Ukrainians are good enough to die against Russia, so “American boys” don’t have to…..
…..(because after the Iraq clusterfuck, Americans just won’t accept any large number of casualties, it’s totally out of the question)…..

One more quick Ukraine hit…..
This (below) 62-year old Afghanistan veteran is with Russia’s BARS-7 volunteer battalion.
He lived in Russia while two sons from two different wives live in the Ukraine.
One of his sons, he spoke with last in April, by phone.
The son had just joined up (or was drafted, not clear) into the Ukrainian army, he told his dad something like…..
“If we meet, I won’t spare you.”
The other son is also in the Ukrainian army.
He said he’d like to see both of his sons, but the nasty one, he will just hand the guy over as a prisoner to the military police, let them deal with him, LOL.
I wrote about this before.
It is a common enough situation.
Certainly AT LEAST TWO-THIRDS of those living in the Ukraine, have one or more known relatives living in Russia.
(If you include Crimea and Russian-controlled areas of Donetsk and Lugansk as part of Russia, it’s probably more like three-quarters.)
You never hear this in the MSM, it’s taboo.
It’s like, this is “Hitler invaded Poland, and we must fight for Poland“… really dumb.
These are two separate states…..
.….but NOT two separate populations.
Even if you think Russia is wrong, at least report the truth, give people some fucking context!!!
Of course, by now, everyone knows the Ukraine thing is just an AGENDA….
(1) to promote bureaucratic turf, prerogatives, careers, egos,
(2) to VASTLY expand cashflows for a “certain industry” (which has much clout in Congress),
…..and (3) to serve as a sort of “loyalty” test, censoring and shutting down any opposition as extreme and unacceptable…..
…..just like with the vakk-seenz, (1) and (2) and (3), same thing.
It’s the same thing.
It’s even the same voting bloc in the USA, that has largely peeled away from the Narrative on this one.
Almost no one really believes in it (or gets excited for it) anymore…..
…..but it will go on, and on, and on…..
…..like the vakk-seenz and the boossters…..
…..because there’s just no lobby to end it.

If you thought the dotcoms were bad, you’ve seen nothing yet.
I’ve spent hours playing with ChatGPT, “a prototype artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI.”
Amazon spent many billions of dollars on its failing Alexa.
Alexa can’t even do ONE PERCENT of what ChatGPT can do.
This thing is being described as a mortal threat to Google’s search engine.
I don’t know about that, as Google has the resources to buy it out, or replicate it.
Regardless, it (or something like it) WILL supplant the ranked, messy lists that we refer to as “search results.”
With search results, yes, on certain topics, many topics…..
…..Google “curates” the results…..
…..but if you go down far enough, you might still find something closer to the truth.
With THIS technology…..
…..there will be ONLY ONE, well-written (or well-spoken) answer to EVERYTHING.
People will accept it, because they are LAZY.
Why scan your eyes over a bunch of crap…..
…..and have to decide what to click on…..
…..when you can find ONE well-written answer, that you can copy-paste into your college essay or whatever?
Likewise, why sift through a bunch of merchants?
The AI will be happy to recommend just one, just for you.
Whoever controls this product (or products), will control EVERYTHING.
They will have TOTAL CONTROL over minds and wallets.
There will be NOT ONE CRACK for the sun to shine through.
(BTW, Elon Musk is said to have resigned from OpenAI’s board, but he’s still got loads of money wrapped up in the place.)

I asked ChatGPT, why has the Greenland ice sheet EXPANDED in recent years…..
…..and it gave me a well-written, bullshit answer…..
…..about how, sure OK, this may be the trend for recent years…..
…..but on the whole, the ice sheet has been shrinking (you know, because of global warming)…..
…..without ever answering my question (the WHY IS IT EXPANDING NOW part.)
I then spent half an hour asking ChatGPT about Nazis in the Ukraine, the Volyn genocide (against Poles living in northwest Ukraine, etc.)
This thing spit back at me Ukrainian propaganda…..
…..that the guys who carried out the genocide were really freedom-fighters against the USSR…..
…..and the genocide is complicated, and unclear, a subject of debate (LOLOLOLOL)…..
…..and we shouldn’t point fingers, and don’t use questionable sources (I am NOT making this up!!!)…..
…..also, there are no Nazis in the Ukraine, the Ukrainian army doesn’t allow Nazis…..
…..there are no Nazis or fascists in the Ukrainian army…..
…..and no one in the Ukrainian army wears SS or other Nazi or Wehrmacht patches or insignia.
Like, these guys don’t exist…..
Later I came back to the Volyn genocide…..
…..and got a better (real) answer.
The program had evidently shifted to another source!
Of course, this thing is brand new. Eventually, there will be one approved source for anything “controversial”, and it won’t change.
Also of note, this thing composes (crappy but mostly coherent) poetry…..
…..clearly relying on a mammoth database of literature, textbooks, CliffsNotes, periodicals, and website text, likely dating to as far back as the 19th century.
The entire Library of Congress, and then some.
The process by which this material is scanned and used for “inspiration” (based on keywords in your instructions) to produce coherent text…..
…..with narrative progression or other logical structure and coherence, is a mystery to me…..
…..but clearly, a number of the WORLD’S BEST computational linguists were involved in its development.
I told ChatGPT to write a poem about a man who is mourning his lost love…..
…..and then a raven flies in and perches on a bust of Athena in his living room (as in Poe’s The Raven.)
While the program did not reproduce The Raven…..
…..it “knew” to CONNECT the lost love with the visiting raven, in some fashion.
(It had the raven providing the man with relief, LOL. The opposite of Poe’s version.)
Now, independent, intuitive deduction—true “intelligence”—is not possible for a computer, but…..
The program is clearly “well read”, and capable of reviewing terabytes of information at basically the speed of light.
(Obviously, it scanned the various “CliffsNotes” and treatises on this poem… but, didn’t “understand” them very well.)
Likewise…..
I instructed ChatGPT to write a poem about cargoes being carried by different types of ships throughout history.
I did NOT imply the cargoes were different across time, only the ships.
However, the program made that “deduction”, and wrote accordingly…..
…..in line with John Masefield’s Cargoes.
Yes, it must have “read” one or more summaries or analyses of Masefield’s poem.
But it’s still, clearly, very “smart.”
How does it go from reviewing keyword-oriented background information…..
…..to producing structured, sensible, new language demonstrating an “understanding” of that information???
It’s clearly VERY advanced.
I don’t know, but someone said it writes pretty good “macros” (command formulas) for MS Excel spreadsheets…..
…..saving literally several hours of work-time.
Folks, this thing could eventually clear out MILLIONS of jobs.
(Thus FURTHER shifting the balance of power in society to the techies and the money that funds them… as if the USA was not “coastal” enough. Sadly, most Republicans / conservatives will be too dumb or “blinded by the light” (or “on the payroll”) to see this. Maybe they’ll wake up when it’s too late… as usual.)
My wife is in finance, I don’t know much about her current (new) job…..
…..but, in the past, she’s had problems with getting lower-level accounting functions done, reliably, on-time, by workers who don’t quit after a year or whatever…..
I’m thinking, AI could largely take humans out of those functions.
As for other fields…..
Would you bet YOUR OWN money…..
…..that the Pentagon will NEVER give control of its nuke launching protocol to an AI program?
What with all the prospects for colonels and generals to retire…..
…..and land a seat on the board of “Cyberdyne Systems”…..

The one thing I can see stopping or even delaying this monstrosity…..
…..is Variant X…..
…..which would kill or debilitate the vakksed-and-double-boossted, West Coast programmer types (OpenAI is based in San Francisco, of course) at a high rate.
However, after Variant X (if we’re still here)…..
…..there might be such a labor shortage…..
…..that deployment of this technology is accelerated.

A friend told me to try on Bing and guess what the first response was what i was after. Happened many many times.

You hit the nail on the head with “well read”. The technology does not have to be good enough to replace all humans, just good enough to replace most of them. If I was a copy writer, journalist or other form of wordsmith I’d be heading down to my local library to weapon up for the coming apocalypse.

AI development (not the OpenAI in particular) is most concerning in terms of economic “financialisation”. I’m not particularly well informed in economic/financial matters, but it is my understanding that trading and investment decisions are frequently informed by correlations in economic/financial data (eg bond yield curve). I listened to the “DeepMind: The Podcast” series (a bit of a shameless BBC promotion for Google’s recent British AI acquisition i think). My key takeaway was the use of large databases to train the algorithm, and validate it’s performance prior to deployment. Given the volumes of detailed, granular historical financial data that exist, i can’t imagine why such an algorithm couldn’t correlate an impressive string of facts and figures together into some congressional level investment advice. Perhaps such an AI has already be deployed (some problems being solved are potentially more complex than this already – such as protein folding etc). Do you agree? If so, how could we avoid (or spot) being steamrolled by the Warren Buffet 5000?

Yes – many government programs in DOE and DOD. Hard to get juice info on them because of course they’re classified. And there are commercial programs that are far more advanced than all of OpenAI’s projects.
The latest Machine Intelligence news is that they are becoming damn good at writing computer programs themselves.

If you play long enough with the ChatGPT it will tell you that Bandera killed the Jews and that it did NOT kill the Jews. The beta version spits out different answer more closer to reality but still you can coax it to spit out anything. It also returns definitive answers when it has no data to back it up. This will be used the same way idiots use Alexa so you got that one right.

Just yesterday I watched the movie Wargames, where the Pentagon does turnover control of the US’ strategic forces to a computer named WOPR. Fun movie. Mathew Broderick was a nerd. Ally Sheedy was a cute teen.

I found that movie particularly suspenseful as a kid.
The latest issue of Science (12/09/2022) touches upon two trends in AI that may significantly enhance its power.
One is the ongoing effort to incorporate brain computational approaches to AI. In other words, to adapt the most advanced computational structures known (all of which are biological) to AI.
The other R&D trend is a push to give AI the capability of generating its own code on the fly. The latter may greatly reduce the need for all those flesh-and-blood programmers in San Francisco and elsewhere. How far all of this will pan out is anybody’s guess.

Yes AI and Machine Learning is very impressive in the broad sense, and it could replace many types of labor/jobs, but with the current computing technology is a dead end. I’m not worried about computers getting self awareness and wiping us out as the dominant species. In a few words: a new “brain / computing” techonology has to be created that could mimic the human mind… Secondly we must first have to actually know how the human mind works and how it actually learns and solves problems without having an enormous reference database, that the current AI depends on.
I’m more worried about sociopaths and psycopaths (also known as high ranking politicians) missusing current technology to maniupulate the very vast majority of imbeciles that we call human beings (which have always been done and will keep doing).

Not sure if it’d be good or bad, but I think the AI tech is self-defeating as far as the interests of the investors are concerned due to “garbage in, garbage out”. Relying on AI with ideologically influenced programming, flawed inputs, and inevitable off-line blind spots will just put these people into an ironclad bubble that will eventually crash into reality.

AI is going to be worse. No doubt about that. Though a lot of people will not fall for the one answer. A lot of human manipulation requires false choice and some kind of dichotomy like the “two party system”, which is just a uniparty underneath. . Obumo care for example gave out 3 “choices” bronze/silver/gold. A lot of cake mixes “required” adding milk and eggs. This would be curious to anyone that knows about dried milk and eggs. The reason is that it makes people feel like they are baking. If you just poor a box of power people don’t feel like they are doing anything. Therefore I largely agree with the A/I point but one should be on the lookout for false choice as well . People like to think they are making decisions, and the one thing that trumps laziness is to also conceal it,

make me really happy your un-retirement. working in IT(development) my self, I can tell you the IA is some really scary shit, the chat bot index tons of info over what is call tautology graph to manage the key words and an unsupervised Neural Network to produce the text, it really don’t understand anything, just produce a coherent answer over time, of course is as good as the main source of information. the really scary part is it can be branch so every one have one especially adapted to you particular way of thinking. every time you enter a question it will produce better and better text with word that your level of understanding can easily consume, if you are very versed in a particular language it will produce very elaborated text, the other way around work the same. the point is to induce comfort (the same with cell phone). now google don’t have a very good one (they are focusing on Quantum Computing, very big leap in basically everything), but imaging for one moment(if you can, not every one can) all the data that google has on you, all the search, all your devices and all the things that you have done on those devices, plus your contacts and the places you have been (facebook know all of this and is not on every android device on the planet), all the post you has posted, all review, if you plot all this data and draw a line that cover most of the points, do some extrapolation and the magic is here, they know to which products you are susceptible to buy, which food you like at which time of the day, how do you think on some issues, which news upset you and which one you like, the way you vote and the most important part what will make you change your vote. and that is how you stole an election.
But it’s still not really *thinking*, or, as you said, “it really don’t understand anything, just produce a coherent answer over time”; and the part where algorithms associate your tastes with potential products to buy, or videos to watch or people to follow, is already there. It’ll just get better at it, but the current mainstream AI seems to be mostly about good predictions, which can take you a long way, but it really isn’t *intelligent*. Cheers

You should do this blog/video thing for a living (or at least part-time), whatever white collar job that keeps you busy could not be as meaningful as reaching/ teaching thousands of people and you are genuinely more entertaining then most or all of the other pundits who speak on similar topics. I understand that your monetization was f-up but there are other ways to generate revenue. You could do a subscriber podcast once a week on locals, maybe make it a Q&A where you answer listener questions /comments and shit on them much like you do in this comments section. On top of that there is the drop shipping merch route, you would first have to fix your logo (sorry bud but that thing is pretty janky) then you could stick it on mugs and bucket hats. Anyway, not trying to tell you how to go about your business, this is meant as more of a compliment then advice.
P.s I am a graphic designer and would happily whip you up a new logo free of charge and if you don’t like it there is no obligation to use it.

Just thought I’d point out that the bust of Pallas over Poe’s chamber door, was unlikely that of Athena. According to the font of all knowledge, Wikipedia, Pallas is an epithet of Athena, but no one seems to know what it means. An epithet being a descriptive word or phrase attached to a name as in “Alexander the Great”. So not exactly “another name for”. Wikipedia lists eight different Pallas all from the Greek except for one from Virgil’s poem The Aeneid. My money is on that one because:
Virgil was a poet. Pallas is a rather important character–he’s Aeneis’ friend. Aeneis is the Trojan who gets to Italy and is the progenitor of Rome. The Aeneid is an epic poem (9,896 lines in dactylic hexameter) and The Raven has a specific syllabic arrangement (it changes from verse to verse, but it’s basically 3 lines of 8 syllables, 1 line of 7, repeat 3 lines of 8, 1 line of 7, then 1 line of 8, 2 lines of 7, on to the next verse. There are some verses where one of the middle 8 syllable lines becomes 9 or 10 syllables, but I’m not sure how or why.) Anyway I was just going to mention this as a theory, then I got bogged down in the swamp of Wiki links 😉 So now you have a bunch of information that I didn’t have (or need), before embarking on this epic quest. I remember listening to Elon Musk on Joe Rogan, talking about this AI stuff. I’m not well versed on the topic but what he said and the way he spoke about it was terrifying. He was not very eloquent and I would say he lacks communication skills, at least verbally. But the feeling I’ve got is that these type of people lack ampathy and don’t like human beings at all. My understanding, Musk has admitted to having Asperger’s syndrome a.k.a. a “treatable” but serious form of high-functional autism. Of course, the degree of “function” depends, in large part, on how much money your parents spent on therapists for you. Seeing as Musk comes from a rich family, he must have been very well trained to act and appear normal (even if he’s still a bit off.) However, such autists are, at best, only “trained” to come across as normal humans; they really are as you described. That is, many (not all, but many) are in some ways like sociopaths… in that they are extremely self-centered/absorbed (not in a nasty way, it is what it is) and lack any capacity for empathy at all.

This means many of these jobs were just pissing away money and did not contain the element of necessity. I’ve worked hay crew, dairies, built house, plumbed houses, wired house, roofed house, pulled my guts outs finishing concrete, served as any infantry marine and a cop. How does that techno creature you have been testing replace folks like me? It seems to me, the millions of jobs that you are talking about being replaced aren’t really necessary anyways.

You know, that road crew you drove by the other day, their trenching machine does the work of ten or more men. It still needs someone to fuel it up and operate it, and someone else to deliver it to the job site (although that driver is making other runs as well), and someone to maintain it (although that mechanic could be responsible for 20 other pieces of equipment)… but there’s ten ditch digging monkeys you don’t need, thanks to that machine.
Incidentally, since you served… this goes for the military as well. No, soldiers/marines won’t be entirely replaced with robots… but, I assume you’ve heard the term “force multiplier”? When you have force multipliers, you don’t need as much of a force (humans.)

The jobs created since deindustrialization in the U.S. and your UK have tended towards very “knowledge intensive” and well paid (mostly computer software and related website design, database admin, etc., also biotech and a few lesser fields), or crap jobs in retail and “hospitality” (as people eat out more, and buy more junk on their credit cards.)
This has bifurcated society, leaving entire states in the dust, and necessitated absurdly loose, “Third World” fiscal and monetary policy to fill the holes with social spending, sick-care, bullshit government jobs, and “education inflation” to warehouse the formerly (economically and reproductively) productive young in ever-longer, ever more-useless programs of study, thus also granting more power over mushy minds to peddlers of toxic and divisive ideological bullshit.
So, we have ever greater speculative boom-bust cycles, as well as greater politicial instability and loss of social cohesion, to include the Democrats and their RINO allies taking a much more aggresive, no-rules approach to sticking it to the other party (starting with spying on the Trump campaign in 2016 and the launch of industrial-scale censorship and suppression across the dotcom complex in 2017), essentially taking the externalized fear and hatred of the Cold War and the small-war 1990s-2000s, and internalizing it.
In the USA, this has already generated a feeling of two separate countries, ready to split.

Second: You mention that the Pentagon is becoming more and more loath to part with any more armaments for Ukraine, but in previous posts (Suitcase with no handle, I think) you have argued that the USA is already committed to Ukraine in order to avoid an ‘Akela missed his mark’ moment. As far as I can tell, the Russians do not intend to help Uncle Sam save face if it means not retaking the Donbass or giving up the land corridor. Why do you seemingly discount the possibility of the hawks getting their way, the USA committing to still more support for Ukraine despite depleting stocks, and the Pentagon being obliged to shut up and smile?
Hello. I don’t discount anything. I said the USA has been hesitant with sending air defense systems to the Ukraine… and really that’s just stating the obvious. We’ll see if that holds, it probably won’t but (given the delay) it may be too late to make a difference.
The worst and saddest part of all this manouvers of the west: It prolongs the war. Many more people will die and more will suffer. One has to imagine being a parent or a child of an Ukrainian or Russian soldier killed. Very depressing.
I was thinking less of air defense, and more of the tanks, APCs, artillery, and ammo, that Ukraine is running out of, and that Zaluzhny requires in order to retake Melitopol. Forgive me for not clarifying this earlier. What fraction of his request (300 tanks, 500 APCs, ~500 artillery pieces and sufficient ammo) do you think will end up being filled? (After all, you’ve got a politically influential lobby calling to double down on supporting Ukraine, and I imagine the defense contractors wouldn’t mind increased orders either.)

In regard to the SkyNet reference, would you comment on Russia’s “Dead Hand” nuclear launch capability? My understanding is that it’s right out of Dr. Strangelove and will automatically launch three executive command missiles from various locations within Russia that then arm and trigger the launch of nearly all of Russia’s strategic nuclear missiles. It is theoretically designed to defeat a decapitation First Strike attack.
